    1. I must confess to feeling a bit daunted before starting this novel, as its 471 pages looked formidable. I should have known better, having read the first couple chapters in manuscript form a couple years ago. The only quibbles I managed on that first reading were questions of historical accuracy: Did Indian tribes in the East have access to horses? Was it customary to tip waitresses in the 18th century? But the author seemed to have control of her facts as well as the ability to spin a good yarn [...]
