    1. This is one of the great books of Australia. Superb use of perspective that allows us to take multiple views of single issues, and provides a balanced (for the times written at least) account of the various Australian experiences. This is the abridged version by Michael Cathcart which I found to be a little disjointed - sometimes skipping the introduction of characters (although I haven't read the original for comparison), however it generally reads well. Cathcart's addendum in which he provides [...]

    2. This is an abridgement of his original work in 6 volumes, so some of its faults may be the responsibility of Mr. Cathcart. Some paragraphs float untethered in the narrative, they retained scores of statistics and conclusions with no analysis to bind them together. On the other hand, Mr. Clark was clearly an embittered man who was unwilling to allow positive motivation to anyone, and could not even comment on the geometric street layout of a city without a negative comment.

    4. In six abridged sections from Manning Clark's original epic six (6) volume "History of Australia" Michael Cathcart manages to condense and yet still bare the distinctive voice of the original.
